The Religious NGOs connect the Grassroots at UN

The Congregations of St. Joseph was one of the main organizers and held a Side Event on 30 January 2018, during the fifty-sixth session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD56) at the United Nations in New York, January 29-February 7, 2018. “Connecting Development and Human Rights in the eradication of extreme poverty: Strategies for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda” was the topic of the event, co-sponsored with Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the UN and 9 other NGOs: Augustinians International, Fondazione Proclade Internazionale–Onlus, Franciscans International, International Presentation Association, Passionists International, Sisters of Charity Federation, Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Society of Catholic Medical Missionaries and the NGO Committee on Migration.  (more…)

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On December 11, 2017, the UN in New York hosted a program to open the year-long campaign to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was signed in Paris on December 10, 1948. The program at the UN attracted a large crowd who heard both Mr. António Guterrres, UN Secretary-General and Mr. Miroslav Lajčák, President of the General Assembly, remind the group of the progress we have made in the area of human rights. Refugee Crisis Addressed

Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, addressed the Security Council on November 2, invited by the Italian presidency.  He addressed the fact that the refugee situation in our world is an deepening crisis, noting that among the more than 65 million displaced persons today we can find groups who are more recently displaced and those who fled their homes more than 40 years ago.
